Disability Rights Coalition

In June 2012 a number of organisations came together to discuss cuts affecting people with a disabilities, particularly young adults leaving school. Several meetings followed at which the following organisations were represented: Inclusion Ireland, Down Syndrome Ireland, National Parents Alliance, Special Needs Parents Association, Irish Autism Action, and Autism Rights & Equality Alliance, and Disability Activist Suzy Byrne.

The aim of the Coalition is to;

  • Build a strong coalition of rights based organisations and individuals representing people with a disability and their families.
  • Build networks and share information.
  • Promote a rights based agenda
  • Promote empowerment of people with a disability rather than conforming to typical charity model.

People with a disability and their families marched on 21st November in Dublin to say in one loud voice, ‘We Demand Rights, Not Charity’ & Called on the Government to Implement Disability Promises in the 2011 Programme for Government.

Over 5000 people from across Ireland attended the demonstration representing themselves and delivered their message to Government.
